Art & Design

CURRICULUM INTENT:

At The Axis Academy, our Art curriculum nurtures creativity, self-expression, and confidence through diverse artistic opportunities. Our curriculum encourages students to broaden their practical skills through a range of processes, therefore developing their creative decision making, resilience to challenging experiences and independence.

Rooted in our core values—child-centered, adaptive, and authentic—we provide inclusive, supportive learning tailored to individual needs. We inspire students to experiment, invent, and develop personal artistic identities in a trusting, engaging environment.

The study of Art and Design encourages pupils to become curious about of a variety of different cultures and practices, enabling them to become well-rounded individuals that are informed of the world around them.

Throughout each of the key stages, students, will develop skills using a wide range of art media and be able to link their learning to wider contexts.

Our aspirations are to encourage the development of a range of transferable skills; such as independence, critical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, self-management and analytical skills. It is our intention to provide students with the key skills they require to be able to succeed post education.

Our programme of study centres on 4 key objectives:

  1. Knowledge – Of artists, designers, craft makers, processes and context.
  1. Generating Ideas – Skills of Designing and Developing Ideas through focused investigations, experimentation and planning.
  1. Making – Ability to select materials, refine and record ideas through exploration of media to develop a project or theme.
  1. Evaluating – Ability to reflect upon their own work and that of others to continuously improve their own practice and gain an understanding of the creative, media and design industries.
