Curriculum Intent:
At The Axis Academy, our mathematics curriculum is designed to inspire a love of learning and intellectual curiosity in every student. Rooted in trauma-informed approaches, we aim to provide a nurturing environment that promotes academic growth while fostering emotional resilience and authentic relationships.
We believe mathematics is more than numbers—it’s a tool to navigate and understand the world. Through carefully crafted lessons and real-world applications, we encourage students to see the beauty and practicality of math, fostering lifelong skills and an enduring enthusiasm for learning.
Our curriculum builds on the KS2 curriculum and is structured around the key Assessment Objectives (AOs) of KS3 and KS4 maths, ensuring a comprehensive and balanced approach to mathematical education:
- AO1: Use and apply standard techniques – Students develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics, including the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. This foundation supports their ability to tackle more complex problems with confidence.
- AO2: Reason, interpret and communicate mathematically – students learn to interpret mathematical information and communicate their ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- AO3: Solve problems within maths and in other contexts – Our curriculum encourages students to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve a variety of problems, both within maths and in real-world contexts. This includes developing strategies for problem-solving, making connections between different areas of maths, and applying their skills to unfamiliar situations.
By integrating these objectives into our teaching, we ensure that students not only achieve academic success but also develop critical thinking skills, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the subject. Our goal is to equip students with the mathematical competence and confidence they need to thrive in the future.
