Curriculum Intent:

We believe that all of our young people deserve a curriculum that meets their differing needs and enables them to fulfil their unique potential.  We all want our pupils to be successful, happy members of the community and to maximise their opportunities, leading to a positive destination in life.  It is the intention of the Science curriculum to enable this.  The first step is to give them a safe space to learn, where they feel secure, protected and ready to embrace their learning.  The Science laboratory is just that, a place of kindness and caring where everyone and their achievements no matter how small are celebrated.

The curriculum principles are to:

  • Encourage the pupils to ask questions and develop a line of enquiry based on observations of the real world, alongside prior knowledge and experience.
  • Make predictions using scientific knowledge and understanding.
  • Put personal, social and emotional wellbeing at the forefront.  Thereby, encouraging all young people to be aware of their own needs and the empathy required to give sensitivity to others who have differing needs to their own.
  • To be adaptive at all points in the lesson to meet the unique needs of all of our learners.
  • Stretch and challenge all learners over 5 years, considering different starting points.
  • Develop effective literacy, numeracy and communication skills, creating learners who are confident and competent.
  • Embed a range of wider opportunities and experiences for all, to ensure pupils have an educational experience that is rich and varied.

As a result, the Science curriculum will:

  • Inspire learners to become confident, resilient scientists who develop a love of learning science.
  • Provide a stimulating environment that integrates enquiry, discovery and exploration into learning.  Which takes into account individual needs, strengths and starting points.
  • Develop successful learners who are able to apply scientific knowledge and understanding correctly to both familiar and unfamiliar contexts in the world.
  • Enable learners to use a range of literacy and mathematical skills that can be applied to the world in which they live.
  • To enable learners to use their knowledge and understanding of Science to further their Science education beyond The Axis Academy and/or to further their future.

The sequencing of the programme of study is designed around themes set out through the most current research by STEM education.  It obviously covers all the national curriculum but considers misconceptions and breaks theses down as the pupils are academically ready.
